The Role of the Supreme Court in Indian Democracy
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Supreme Court of India occupies a central position in the country's constitutional democracy. As the highest court, it exercises constitutional interpretation, judicial review, appellate jurisdiction, and powers relating to the enforcement of Fundamental Rights. The Court also contributes to the maintenance of federal balance, the rule of law, and institutional accountability. Through its judgments, constitutional interpretation, and remedies, the Supreme Court has influenced the development of Indian public law and democratic governance. At the same time, its role must operate within constitutional limits and alongside the functions of Parliament and the executive. This paper examines nine major dimensions of the role of the Supreme Court in Indian democracy, including constitutional interpretation, judicial review, rights protection, federal disputes, public interest litigation, electoral and institutional accountability, judicial independence, and contemporary challenges.
