The Role of the Constitution in Protecting Citizens' Rights

Abstract

A constitution provides the fundamental legal framework through which a state organizes public authority and recognizes the rights and freedoms of its citizens. In a democratic system, constitutional protections establish limits on government power, promote equality before the law, support individual liberty, and provide mechanisms through which rights can be enforced. Constitutional rights may include protections relating to life, liberty, equality, expression, association, religion, and political participation, depending on the constitutional system. This paper examines the role of the constitution in protecting citizens' rights through constitutional supremacy, fundamental rights, separation of powers, rule of law, judicial review, equality, democratic participation, constitutional remedies, and contemporary challenges.
