The Role of Local Government in Rural Development

Abstract

Local government is an important institution in rural development because it operates close to communities and can identify local needs, deliver basic services, manage local infrastructure, and facilitate citizen participation. Rural development involves improvements in livelihoods, education, health, sanitation, roads, water supply, employment, agriculture, and social inclusion. Effective local government can connect national and regional development policies with local conditions and priorities. However, limited financial resources, administrative capacity, political interference, unequal participation, and weak coordination can constrain performance. This paper examines nine major dimensions of the role of local government in rural development, including public service delivery, infrastructure, participatory governance, agriculture, local economic development, social welfare, environmental management, accountability, and future development priorities.
