The Role of Education in Promoting Democratic Citizenship

Abstract

Education plays a central role in developing informed, responsible, and active citizens in a democratic society. Beyond the transmission of academic knowledge, education can develop civic awareness, critical thinking, respect for diversity, understanding of constitutional values, and the ability to participate constructively in public life. In India, constitutional principles and educational policies recognize the importance of education in developing responsible citizenship and social cohesion. Schools, colleges, and informal learning environments can provide opportunities to understand rights and duties, democratic institutions, equality, and public responsibility. This paper examines nine major dimensions of the role of education in promoting democratic citizenship, including civic knowledge, constitutional literacy, critical thinking, participation, equality, tolerance, digital citizenship, democratic values, and contemporary challenges.
